Mankato far behind in online voting for Franklin Rogers Park basketball court revamp

Mankato City Staff are encouraging people to vote online so that a local basketball court can be refurbished by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The basketball court at Franklin Rogers Park is one of three finalists in southern Minnesota in the team’s ‘Our Courts, Our Future’ grant program.

Eric Wollenzien with the Mankato Parks Department said the Mankato project is far behind Hastings and Worthington and, “We just need the people to vote, because we are trailing in the voting system right now. The votes close May 20th, at 11:59 p.m.”

Wollenzien said work will wrap up in about a week on the nearly $3.2-million renovation of the baseball field at the park and, “The courts would be a great addition to that. We’d have the new field at The Frank and then we’d have new basketball courts.”

He said if the park gets enough votes to secure the grant, a lot of work would be done to the courts, which would be, “Overlaid, repainted, probably new hoops I’m guessing. We actually have two courts there, so we would probably fund the second one on the city.” He added that the work, “Would probably be close to $70-80,000.”

The winner of the court refurbishing will be announced on the Timberwolves Facebook page on May 24 at 4 p.m.
