The feelings are still raw

Mar 31, 2015 -- 5:48am

The emotions are raw...and that's a good thing.  Many Maverick Hockey Fans are still very upset that the team lost...and the way that they lost...in the NCAA tournament last weekend...and that means THEY CARE.  Finally people in this community REALLY LOVE this hockey team.  I think in the long run THAT is the thing to take away from what happened in South Bend.  The goal that was scored in my opinion was a Good Goal all along...the referee was following proper officiating technique when he waved it off...and then they looked at the film to confirm what they saw on the ice.  That WAVING OFF the goal is what has MSU Mankato Fans upset...but they are trained to wave off/review...rather than point GOAL and take goal off of the board. My question to everyone is...and no one has answered this to me: IF the Mavs had SCORED the goal in the exact same situation...would we be arguing that it ISN'T a goal?

I LOVED THIS TEAM.  They are a bunch of high quality...high character guys...with a ton of talent. I truly believe they could have won the tournament...but they picked a bad day to have a bad day.  Emotions will cool as time goes by and I hope this team isn't remembered for this Goal and this Game.  Because they were so much more than this one moment it time.

Sometimes You Just Have To Hang On

Mar 24, 2015 -- 6:03am

The Minnesota Wild didn't play there best game last night...but they WON. With just 9 games left in the season every point is worth scratching and clawing for...and that is what they did last night.  Toronto is out of the playoffs and the Wild played against them as if they were nothing to worry about. Leading 2-0 in the third period the Wild forgot to continue pressing the action and with 5 mins to go Toronto scored to make it 2-1.  The last 5 mins were a struggle but they got the job done and snuck out of  Toronto with 2 pts.  It's the Islanders tonight...should be 2 more pts...then...not an easy game the rest of the season.  What a run it has been since the trade for Devn Dubnyk.  The trade may go down as the greatest trade in team history.

Barry's Back So I have time to Blog

Mar 23, 2015 -- 5:54am

Haven't blogged in over a week because Barry was on Vacation.  When Barry is gone I slide over into the Sports Desk...which means I spend the first hour of the day putting together 5 separate Sportscasts. 2 are for "The Fan" and Radio Mankato Stations that run in the morning...they are 1 minute long and usually are what is called a "Dry Read" or "Straight Read" meaning no sound bites. Those are pretty simple...4 to 5 stories with an open and close and you are done.  It has to be exactly Sixty seconds...but with computer editing you can take out all or parts of breaths and tighten up any gaps and make it work.  You usually go over a minute to be safe and then cut back from there.

Then there are 3 two and a half minute long sportscasts...one runs at 7:17...the others at 8:31 and 9:31.  2:30 is a long time to just read sports stories and scores so those are filled with "Sound"...or "Actualities"  Most of the "Cuts" that we get come from The Minnesota News Network...Twins/Wild/Vikings/Gophers and Twolves. From time to time we have some local stuff....like a Maverick Hockey preview with Mike Sullivan.  You would think that it would take 2:30 secs. to record a 2:30 sec sportscast...and sometimes it does.  But other times you may stumble while reading...or a cut won't fire...or whatever. Again computer editing makes it easy to make the final product pretty good...but don't believe for a second it was as easy as it sounded.

After each sportscast is recorded it has to be saved in one computer and downloaded into a file in another computer...not heavy lifting mind you...but it all takes time.  So that in a nutshell is why the blog sits when I am filling in for the Bear.

65 Degrees????????????? It's March

Mar 10, 2015 -- 5:34am

Steve Wollenhaus is forecasting 65 degrees for the high temperature today.  That doesn't seem possible.  Last thursday morning we had -11 degrees for the overnight low.  Less than a week later it will be 76 degrees WARMER.  LOVE IT.  Everyone seems in a better mood.  The problem is...we aren't going to stay this warm.  We will get more cold and more snow...frankly we need the snow.  The good thing is from now on...when it snows...it won't last.

12 Hockey Games

Mar 09, 2015 -- 6:09am

Friday thru Sunday I was able to get a bunch of work done at School...and also work on my taxes.  But this weekend was actually about HOCKEY.  My wife Anne and my Daughter Maddie and I were able to watch All or parts of TWELVE HOCKEY GAMES THIS WEEKEND.  What an awesome thing to behold. Not every team that I wanted to win...was able to win...but it was fantastic.  State tournament Semi Final and Championship games...Regular Season College Games and NHL games made it one of the best TV Viewing weekends in a long time.

I Blame myself

Mar 06, 2015 -- 7:38am

St Thomas Academy had a 3 goal lead in yesterday's quarterfinals of the MSHSL State Boys Hockey AA Tournament...and they blew it...losing in O.T to Duluth East.  As you may know I picked the Cadets to WIN THE TOURNAMENT.  The McCargar jinx got them.

Congrats to The Mankato East Cougars for their win over Marshall last night...I will NOT BE PICKING THEM TO WIN THE STATE TOURNAMENT.
