Matt Cooke Will be suspended because of Who He Is...Not What He DID

Apr 23, 2014 -- 5:31am

Minnesota Wild Wing Matt Cooke will be suspended today after a kneeing penalty on Monday night that injured a player for the Avalanche.  Cooke was coming in for an open ice check and the player ducked and leaned to the right to avoid being hit.  The two players knees colided and a knee injury occoured when the player spun and hit the wall.  Cooke will be suspended today because of his history as a former dirty player NOT because of the hit the other night.  Michael Russo of the Startribune said he has looked at the league videos of what ARE and what AREN'T supposed to be a penalty and he cant see any difference.  I have seen STILL shots of the injured player from behind that shows while he is avoiding being hit...his left leg is sticking out...how could Cooke do anything but collide with it.

Everyone is coming down on the Dirty Player..."He must be made to pay"...they will get their way today.  But they are wrong. I would say the same thing if it was an Avalanche player who took out a Wild player.

Absolute and Utter Domination...1-0 in O.T.?

Apr 22, 2014 -- 5:25am

The Minnesota Wild dominated the Colorado Avalanche Monday Evening in St Paul in Game 3 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Final Score? 1-0 in Overtime.  If you see the score you might think it was a close game...it was not...except for this guy name Varmalov who just happens to be the best Goalie in the NHL.  The Wild peppered the Av's for a team record 45 shots on goal and snuffed out the Av's high flying offense to climb back into the series.

Minnesota played nearly as perfect of a game as you can...but still needed Mikael Granlund to score will diving across the front of the net in Overtime to secure the victory.  Granlund was the best player on the ice thru out the game...lifting his team right back into the series.  Game  4 is a late start on Thursday in Minnesota.  The Wild should be up 2-1 minimally in the series...but let game one slip away...and now need to win 3 of the next 4 to advance.  That is a big task...but if they play the way they did last night...the could win against anyone in the NHL.

1 Last Time

Apr 18, 2014 -- 5:46am

Unless there is a change to the story, this will be my final post about the Maverick Football Team, until they start shoveing the ball down their opponents throats this fall.  Yesterday everything that needed to be said in public WAS SAID IN PUBLIC.   The players who refused to play for Todd Hoffner the day before...said that they would play for him...and that they didn't mean to show disrespect to the coach (which I believe they certainly DID MEAN TO DO...but I digress).  Kevin Buisman publicly apologized to Hoffner...and Hoffner made it clear that Aaron Keen is an important member of his staff.

When it comes down to it...I believe that the players were very concerned that Aaron Keen would not return to the team in the fall...as his contract is up in June.  After the dust-up on the field Wednesday...that has become a mute point.  Hoffner has had to admit that things can't be the way they were in the past because the players have seen a different way...and they liked it.  Hoffner has had to endure a number of S_ _ T sandwiches over the last 2 years...more than many people will in a life time...and I suppose that you could say he will be a better person for it??? But I have the feeling that Hoffner didn't really feel the need to go back to school at this point in his life....and if he did...I don't think he had any idea "HOW TOUGH THE COURSE WORK WAS GOING TO BE.  My hope for Todd and Melody and their children is that we don't hear anything about them for a long time...and I would bet that they would be just fine with that.

This Never Should Have Happened

Apr 17, 2014 -- 5:29am

The title of this blog really could mean 2 things...The Spectacle that happened yesterday on the MSU Football field should have never happened and for that matter the entire thing going back 2 years should have never happened. I was aware thru social media that the players were not happy and an opportunity to meet the team in private and talk before it ever got outside was missed.  Who should have called for the meeting?....just about anyone could have seen this was coming...you have a group of 18-22 year old young men who really have taken ownership of this program the last 2 years and they feel that their part of the program has completely been ignored.  One Tweet that was retweeted over and over again was...The # MAvFam just reminded the world that athletes are players, not property.

I assume that calmer heads will prevail and after meetings today and into the future the team WILL end up practicing and playing football.  The odds of a group staying together and speaking as one for a long period isn't good.  The University certainly CAN'T replace Todd Hoffner with Aaron Keen...that has already been decided in court. Keen has at least publicly done the right thing in saying that Hoffner is the Head Coach and that he is happy to be his assistant.

The thing that occurs to everyone who looks at this sad story is this: NO ONE HAS  COME OUT FOR THE BETTER ON THIS STORY. Not Todd Hoffner...Not Aaron Keen...not Kevin Buisman...Not Richard Davenport...not the School...not the students of the university...not the alumni...not the City Of Mankato and certainly not the players. There are no winners.

There is an element who want to say to the players...turn in your scholarships and go home....I understand that...but a couple things need to be remembered...they are young...they are hurt...and they believe that they should have a say in the program.  I think there is reason to be proud of the players in one aspect and feel very bad for what they have done in another.  The reason for pride is: You want young adults to take an ownership in what they do and in the groups that they are involved...you raise them hoping that they will have a feeling of "This is ours" because We know that people tend to do better when they feel that they are part of something.  You feel bad for what they have done because: They have hurt Todd Hoffner...themselves and the program that they love.

I will say it again....someone missed an opportunity to cut this off at the pass.

The Saga Continues

Apr 16, 2014 -- 5:46am

As was expected MSU Mankato Football Coach Todd Hoffner DID decide to continue as Coach in Mankato after an  arbitrators ruling last week.  Hoffner said it came down to wanting the situation that he had BEFORE the arrrest and later firing.  Hoffner will be on campus today and resume his coaching career this afternoon as the teams' spring football season continues.  Players went to social media after the announcement and feelings were raw on every side of the issue.  I do not envy the coach and the job that he has in front of him...but I think you have to respect his absolute RIGHT to retake his job.  Hoffner will be IN STUDIO this morning on KTOE at 7:40 on Chit and Chat.

Human Drama

Apr 15, 2014 -- 5:26am

The Todd Hoffner/MSU Mankato story will become even more interesting today when Hoffner has a press conference to announce where he will coach football this fall.  Hoffner was fired by the University last May and won an arbitrators ruling to get his job back last week.  In the interim Hoffner was hired as Football Coach at Minot St in North Dakota.  If he stays at Minot...Minnesota State is responsible for the difference in his salary from his old job to his new job.

The arbitrator did something that I didn't think would happen...Put Hoffner back in as the Head Coach here in Mankato. That isn't to say that I didn't think he would win...I assumed that if he won...the ruling would mean MSU Mankato had to pay his contract in full and he could be on his way.  What this means is: He is the Head Football Coach AT BOTH SCHOOLS...and the Schools will play against each other in the 3rd week of the season in September.

The decision for Hoffner is as complicated as it can get...Honor the contract that you just signed in Minot N.D. and try to build a football program at the small University with a poor history of football...BUT where the people at the School gave you a chance when no one else was willing to do so...OR: Come back to a job that you were thrilled to be at until the story unfolded...BUT were ultimately FIRED FROM without cause.

Hoffner has a family that would have to move if he goes to Minot...and a house to sell...and his wife Melody has a job here that it is assumed she enjoys.  The best thing for those of us in the media would be for Hoffner to come back and coach here in Mankato....it would make for GREAT HUMAN DRAMA FOR ALL TO SEE. The problem with that is:  these are REAL PEOPLE...not actors on a TV show...this is REALITY.  Not like the fake reality shows that you see on TV.  My hope is that the Hoffners will make the decision on what to do based solely on WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR CHILDREN.  THE THING TO REMEMBER ABOUT THAT IS :ONLY THE HOFFNERS CAN MAKE THAT DECISION.

The Press Conference is set for 3:00 p.m. today in Minneapolis and KTOE's John Harrington will be there.
