    In a season that didn't go as planned for Trevor Hoffman, baseball's career saves leader added another milestone to his illustrious career. Hoffman earned his 600th save Tuesday night, closing out the Milwaukee Brewers' 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. A few months ago, Hoffman couldn't have been sure this day would come.

  • Latos strikes out 10, Padres top Dodgers (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 11:00 pm

    Mat Latos quickly answered any lingering questions about his health. For extra measure, the 22-year-old San Diego Padres ace ended up with a big league record. Latos bounced back from stomach flu to strike out 10 for the third time in four starts, pitching the NL West leaders to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

  • Lincecum Ks 11, Giants stay 1 game back (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 10:45 pm

    San Francisco's push to make the playoffs has gained some serious momentum -- Tim Lincecum is back to his old self. The ultra-lanky right-hander was almost perfect through six innings and three Giants homered Tuesday night in a 6-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. San Francisco has won four straight and six of seven, keeping up the pressure on San Diego in the NL West.

  • Rockies beat Reds for fifth straight win (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 9:57 pm

    Carlos Gonzalez is hearing something other than the crack of his bat at home plate in Coors Field. Colorado Rockies fans have started paying homage to the outfielder, chanting "M-V-P" in recognition of his memorable season. Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to help the rolling Rockies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive win.

    Jim Thome has found a band of brothers in Minnesota. He's showing off his big swing like the oldest sibling. Thome hit another towering homer, Delmon Young drove in four runs and the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 10-3 on Tuesday night to take their largest AL Central lead in 10 days. Francisco Liriano (13-7) raised his second-half record to 7-0 in 10 starts, giving up seven hits and two runs...

  • Rays rout BoSox, pull closer to Yankees (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 9:08 pm

    David Price got plenty of support when Tampa Bay hit five homers. The way he was pitching, he didn't need much of it. The left-hander allowed two hits over six innings and the Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 14-5 on Tuesday night to move 1 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

  • Phils in 1st for first time since May 30 (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 8:35 pm

    They overcame injuries to nearly every starter, suffered through an awful slump for long stretches and kept going. The Philadelphia Phillies are back in first place by the slimmest of margins. Now they'll try to stay there. Placido Polanco hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the Phillies beat the Florida Marlins 8-7 Tuesday night to move atop the NL East standings.

  • Orioles deny Sabathia 20th win (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 8:29 pm

    CC Sabathia had no reason to expect his game plan, the one that has been nearly perfect against Baltimore throughout his career, would fail him as he tried for his first 20-win season. The newly pesky Orioles had other ideas. Adam Jones capped a three-run first inning with a two-run single and Jake Arrieta made the lead stand up, lifting Baltimore to a 6-2 victory over the New York Yankees on...

  • Verlander, Tigers cool off White Sox 9-1 (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 8:21 pm

    The Chicago White Sox were trying to do something they hadn't accomplished in nearly 60 years. Instead, they lost a game, some ground in the AL Central race and more players. Chicago, which started the day trailing the Minnesota Twins by 3 1/2 games in the AL Central, already had Paul Konerko and Gordon Beckham sidelined by injuries.

  • Jays hand Rangers fifth straight loss (AP) 7 Sep 2010 | 8:16 pm

    If he keeps pounding the Rangers like this, Vernon Wells won't be welcome back in Texas this winter. Wells hit two home runs, Adam Lind and John Buck also connected and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Texas 8-5 on Tuesday night for their seventh consecutive victory over the Rangers.
