The Mankato Department of Public Safety spent their morning on the rooftop and in the parking lot of Dunkin’ Donuts on Madison Avenue, collecting donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
Special Olympics Minnesota Event Coordinator Joe Zander said the money will help support St. Peter Phoenix and Mankato Leap teams and other athletes across Minnesota. “All of that money goes toward our athletes; it stays local, it stays within the state,” he explained, “It allows us to provide leadership opportunities, resources, as well as out state and local competitions that allow our athletes to compete.”
Athlete Jason Stuehrenberg is the son of Blue Earth County Commissioner Vance Stuehrenberg, and plays basketball, softball, flag football, and bowling in the Special Olympics. He appreciates to department’s effort to raise money to support him and other local Special Olympians and said, “I’m the son of a former police officer for Mankato; I’m really proud of them,” he stated.
Dunkin’ Donuts donated $1,000. Similar efforts took place at the chain’s five other locations in Minnesota.
